A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man - Seamus Deane, James Joyce I've been required to read this at least twice in different classes. It just seemed self-important without really being especially self-revealing. It's highly possible that Catholic convention or publishing restrictions in Ireland were holding back what he'd felt or what he'd lived, but neither his table manner blasphemies nor his false garrulousness sound especially genuine. That being said, an Irish pub, minus the music, is often the polar opposite of what you'd expect.
